I read the series “prequel” and found the writing smooth and polished, and characters easy to relate to. It was a good book, but Connelly exceeded my expectations in this book. The second full length, and third overall in this series, Connelly mixes a bit of mystery, secrets, horrible childhoods and take-no-prisoners characters to bring a story that kept me up WAY past my bedtime reading until I reached the end. It has been a VERY long time since I read until 2 or 3 in the morning, simply because I couldn’t bear to put a book down.
Maddie and Adam- oh how the sparks fly between these two! Maddie is a determined, inflexible, commitment phobic and very vocal about her ‘no strings’ rules. A talented lawyer who doesn’t often ‘soften’ the tone of her words, her transition from US prosecuting attorney to working in contractual law for a private firm, her life is consumed with supporting her sister’s education, volunteering at the shelter run by a vet who lives around the corner, and convincing her friends that marriage is unnecessary. Adam is a self-made billionaire, used to calling the tune AND paying the piper, but only because he wrote the rule book. Adam has decided that Maddie’s personality, work ethic and reputation are the perfect addition to his team: and he will use her to gain an insurance settlement for a Monet stolen from his villa in Italy. Even Adam isn’t 100% certain about his motives, although intrigue with Maddie and thumbing his nose at the insurer who is ‘questioning’ the validity of the theft are certainly playing into his decision.
These two are adorable together: Maddie is petite, but her personality makes her ten foot tall and bulletproof. Adam is controlled and domineering, not used to people saying no or not acquiescing to his every whim. Both he and Maddie have issues with relationships: while Maddie is more the “scratch an itch” and move on, Adam is consistently photographed with one piece of arm candy after another. The distance and space that the two set FOR their interactions with others gives them both a sense of control, even when their reactions are signaling far different.
Adam’s refusal to allow Maddie choices, while catering to all of her favorites, using his very thorough background investigation to give him the upper hand in their relationship. But, soon he starts to see that Maddie’s hard shell and often brash speech are a cover for a soft and squishy underbelly, which she is protecting at all costs. In fact, he sees that when he manages to tweak a memory or touch on some real emotion with Maddie, she often reacts with absolute vehemence, so afraid is she of the emotions kicked up. What is more amusing is that he has so consistently compartmentalized his own life and emotions, he doesn’t see that his directing and controlling is a different tool for the same behavior.
And there is so much more: a rescued from death’s door dog that derailed initial travel plans, fast cars, artwork from renowned masters, Maddie’s sister Lily and her new relationship, Maddie’s ‘critique’ of her best friend’s wedding vows, and her gift of a pre-nup and then: Adam and Maddie themselves. So damaged and tentative in anything emotional, and they have to learn that they really DO deserve everything that a relationship entails: not just the knee-shaking, you need a cold drink sex scenes that are liberally peppered throughout the story. Connelly balances a wonderful romance with emotion and plenty of self-revelations and healing, adds in a wonderful supporting cast of characters to add depth, and gives us an ending that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat until the last word.

Former prosecutor Maddie damn near nailed Adam for stealing, but the lucky bastard walked. Now, five years later, he's back, arrogant as ever, giving her an ultimatum—work for him to collect the insurance money, or she'll never work again.
Maddie's all about right and wrong. Adam's shades of gray. So when he uncovers the hot body under her hard-ass veneer and she finds he's a thief with a heart, can the law-and-order lawyer and the fast-and-loose felon put their prickly past behind them?
