The Wedding Shop: Heart’s Bend #2 by Rachel Hauck

The Wedding Shop: Heart’s Bend #2 by Rachel Hauck

Instantly I was grabbed by the dual timeline premise in the synopsis of this story, and had to read Rachel Hauck’s second title in the Heart’s Bend series.  Please read on for my review of

The Wedding Shop

Let me start by saying that Inspirational fiction is not a ‘go-to’ reading option for me – I don’t tend to see the need for a quote from scripture or a reliance on a higher power (any higher power) to find resolution.  That’s my own personal thoughts, and in no way affected my reading or enjoyment of this title. In fact, in some ways, the overriding message of forgiveness did fit the story and the progression of the characters.

Already you know this is a story told in dual timeline, with elements that are wholly of their own time, and several that crossover in ways that prove humanity and emotions are eternal and common to us all.  From the 1930’s era Cora who struggles to find her own moments of hope all while she gives hope and wings to the dreams of the brides who arrive at her shop hoping for magic to the moments of present-day Haley struggling with her own distrust of love and lasting and her promise to a friend lost in combat as she struggles to give the shop a new lease on life.

Gentle reveals of both character’s stories and pasts, heartbreaks and their gradual healing to move on a new path coincide: not for the similarities of situations but more for the feelings and questions each confronted and answered, sometimes repeatedly, as they moved forward in their own process.  With grace, hope and a gradual maturing of both people and memories, this story brings a wonderful sense of completion to both women’s lives.

Two women separated by decades. Both set out to help others find their dreams when their own have crumbled.

It’s the 1930s, and Cora is taking the reins at her family’s wedding shop in Heart’s Bend, Tennessee. Brides come from far away to be doted on by Cora and her family while they find the perfect wedding dress. Meanwhile, Cora has found her true love, Rufus, a riverboat captain. Cora counts the days until his return from the river, and she continues to wait for him as days turn into months and months turn into years. When he finally returns, she receives the shock of a lifetime: he is married to another. Nursing her heartbreak, she must find a way to continue pouring her heart into the hopes and dreams of the brides who visit her shop, all while wondering if she will ever find true love or if it has passed her by.

In present day, Haley has finished her time as a soldier, and suffering from PTSD, wants nothing to do with the heartbreak of this world. She sets off for Heart’s Bend, Tennessee, and in order to honor the memory of a fallen friend, she takes on the task of reopening an abandoned and long-forgotten wedding shop. Perhaps through helping others, she can forget the pain and disappointment in her own life.

Haley isn’t looking for love, but when her friend’s former fiancé becomes involved in the shop’s renovations, they both find that healing and restoration can perhaps happen in their lives too.
