Turn Up the Heat
A story where the characters are ‘starting over’ with a new life is the premise for the Second Chances series, and like other titles I’ve read from this author, there is heat and heart galore!
Lily has left Chicago after a relationship tanked after her ex decided that her fantasies and desires were far too much for him to handle. So, she’s relocated to her sister’s place in Oregon, found a job as a waitress, and is saving up to move along. She has her own plan for her life, and a relationship in Oregon isn’t one of them.
Kincaid has just been released from prison for an assault charge. His motives were justified, but taking matters into his own hands and the potential that is there in terms of his anger adds another layer to the story that will play out between them. A palpable lust flares between them almost instantly, but those moments bring more.
Together these two are well-developed and have solid voices, their interior monologues do add to the emotion of the moment and building their own solid forms. Lily’s ex shamed her desires for submission, in Kincaid she believes she has found a strong man who can and will fulfill that desire. Their moments are super steamy, and while I would have appreciated more interaction between them: playing with the power exchange in the D/s relationship, even sharing their fears and hurts with one another rather than delving into passages of interior monologue, the story moved forward nicely and left me with a solid sense of who these two are.
While I can’t say that I found any of the secondary characters were distracting, they did fill out the moments when our characters were away from one another, and grounded the characters in a life outside their own heads and interactions. I’m truly curious to see where and who Serena Bell chooses for the next installment.

For readers of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, Serena Bell teases all five senses in this poignant, tantalizing novel of fantasies long hidden . . . and finally indulged.
Aspiring chef Lily McKee noticed Kincaid Graves the first time he walked into the dingy diner where she waits tables. With his ice-blue eyes and primal tattoos, his presence puts Lily on edge—and reminds her of all the unfulfilled longings she isn’t pursuing while she’s stuck in this dead-end job. Without a doubt, the man is dangerous to her long-term plans of leaving town and hiring on at a real kitchen—and yet, she hungers for him, if even for just a taste.
Kincaid didn’t come back to his coastal Oregon hometown looking for a good time or a good meal. The ex-con has a score to settle, old wrongs to set right. But Lily, equal parts innocence and insight, brings out an impulsive side of him he thought he’d left behind in the past. And it only takes one intense moment of weakness between them to make him consider the possibility of an entirely new future—and the promise of passion beyond either of their wildest dreams.
