Thirteen Months in

I’ve had a few days away from the ‘mess’ and pressure that is news, social media and to some extent, life.  I got tons of sleep – a bunch of reading in – and while I feel better (and everything corroborates that) we’ve still got a way to go.

To the positive – we got some answers from the VA. He’s on the list for help with housing and for emergency assistance.  Now for the kicker – the emergency assistance is a 4 – 6 week wait (on average) before anything is ‘decided’.  Housing is 4 – 6 MONTHS.  He’s got an appointment on Thursday to work on his VA disability – and history shows us that this will be another 4 – 6 months, at best.  BUT we have all the paperwork, his nephrology, cardiology and vascular team are aware and prepared to work necessary paperwork and access to records in a 24 hour turnaround from request.  We can’t do more than that.

What this does, while we have some ‘possibilities of help” at some future date – does not secure us for the rest of the month and the changes here in Georgia (with the state reopening) means that the hotel we’ve been staying in at a discounted rate because of weekly payments and the Covid-19 crisis that is apparently only visible to healthcare workers and people on the street – and not to the GOP led state governance –  yeah – that’s going away.

It is tough enough to budget out food, shelter, medication and appointments when the ‘shelter’ portion was $280 a week (and trust me – this is the least expensive option that maintains a semblance of safety and security, while providing a place that we can have simple staples to eat – bread, milk, water, cheese, tuna…. and an option to ‘cook’ as limited as it is.  Now with the new “regular” rate of $345 a week – we’re turning up short.  I got charged the new rate this past week to keep us in a room – that was $65 that we had budgeted to medicines, food, & water.  We’ve gotten his meds. Nothing else. We need money for food, for the room, and for him to come back from dialysis (he’s taking the bus –which is free) out – but can’t manage it to return because the dialysis is too draining.

We’ve got to pull together $400 (at the bottom end) to get us through this week and next – he’s still trying (and on the phone now) with the VA to see if there’s not some way to get some ‘emergency’ grant – but the discussions yesterday and the letters he got were just ‘first steps’ on the process- and not any guarantee.  I’m tired of asking – just as I know people are tired of ‘hearing”….. but we’ve got $25 to our name right now.  He’s got his meds, and managed to eat something to take them – but there’s little else.  IF you can help – please share and spread the word — this shouldn’t be happening – not to a vet – not still…. but it is. The PayPal is glhince@gmail.com   Facebook Payments works through messenger.  IF we can’t keep the room – even at the ‘increased/regular’ rate and have to check out – the cost goes up by $100 per week, after the taxes are reinstated as consecutive days are mandated by state tax law to get the rate we’re at.

Please – I know it feels like we’re always asking and always needing – but sadly – we are.  And Everything helps….. We see a finish line (of sorts) but it keeps moving away from us and into the horizon –and with everything else happening – being out and without shelter is more dangerous than ever.
