AudioBook Review ~ That Ghoul Ava by TW Brown: Books 3 and 4

AudioBook Review ~ That Ghoul Ava by TW Brown: Books 3 and 4

Today I have two more reviews in the That Ghoul Ava series from author TW Brown.  Please read on for reviews of the AudioBook versions of book 3, That Ghoul Ava Kicks Some Fairy Ass and book 4, Next on a Very Special That Ghoul Ava.

AudioBook Review:

Jumping right into the action, this story starts off with a bang and continues to deliver giggles and action in equal measure. The satire in this installment combines nicely with the solidification of Ava’s inner monologue and her own character growth, keeping readers of the earlier books well fueled with ‘aha’ moments as the impressions fall neatly into place.

Barging into a mass of fairies with their panties in a twist as they battle one another is one thing: learning the political and historical machinations and slights behind the dispute are another.  The world of the supernatural, undead and otherwise is far more complicated than anyone would have imagined.  Ava’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but she manages with her unique brand of associations and ramblings to find an answer.

Narration from Pamela Lorence continues from the previous title: I characterized it then as a snarky Barbie doll, and that comparison remains apt.  Even as Ava’s character is growing and developing, there is an added touch of humor from her voice and the imagery it brings, even adding a bit of lighthearted feeling to the overall.  Again insets of emotion are well-placed and depicted, adding much to the engagement factor.  Another clever installment in a paranormal/ urban fantasy series with a satirical bent.

Stars:  Overall  4 Narration  3 Story 4

About the Book:

Ava Birch is a ghoul.

Still wading through the world of Supernaturals, she is discovering that daytime soaps have nothing on the drama in her life. Lisa Jenkins, her best friend and human companion, is training to join an organization that tried to eradicate every ghoul on the planet. Morgan, her so-called adviser, continues to answer in as little detail as possible...and now the faeries are causing people to have orgies in the middle of a shopping mall.

Welcome to the REAL WORLD of the Supernaturals where all that stuff you read is based on fact.

AudioBook Review:

The fourth title in this series is a turning point for Ava: she has to decide, hero or villain.  Until this point, she has been straddling that line as she learns about the various denizens of the supernatural world, their histories and their battles. She discovers more about her own alliances and purposes, discovering true friends and finding more new powers and abilities.

This is the point at which she has to learn to choose, and then to live with those choices: waffling between guilt and not giving a flying Frisbee about her own choices and actions just won’t work for her anymore. Tired of the ‘baby spoons’ of information she has been given by those in the know, her decision to get her answers, her way, unearths powers and abilities she did not know existed, and perhaps no-one wanted her to discover.

In terms of the story trajectory this fits perfectly in the arc and again furthers Ava’s growth, both elements feel perfectly acceptable and natural.  Humor isn’t lost in this, even with the more serious topics under the microscope, and not unsurprisingly, Ava’s adaption to the new changes in circumstance are handled with her snarky asides and her do what’s needed approach.

Pamela Lorence returns to narrate this installment, and her performance is growing on me: still carrying that Barbie doll overtone, she’s incorporated the rather matter-of-fact deadpan delivery that notes Ava’s particularly humorous observations: particularly apt as Ava does not seem to realize she is funny.  Another wonderful installment in this series.
