That Ghoul Ava by TW Brown – two AudioBook Titles!

Welcome to the first two of four reviews in the That Ghoul Ava series by TW Brown.  A unique Urban Fantasy / Paranormal series.

AudioBook Review:

Honestly, I grabbed this series of titles purely on the title and cover, thinking they were YA / Teen titles. The covers (and I rarely comment on these) are juvenile and feel amateurish/ cartoony, not quite up to depicting what is between the pages.  No, Ava is 32, newly ‘changed’ to a ghoul, and her life, story and experiences depict just that.

Ava is a failed suicide, only to wake as a ghoul, as if her life could be worse.  She’s also one of the window-lickers on the short bus, but this leads to some gloriously funny and often completely unrelated diversions as she sees something shiny and is consumed by it. Worrying about a dead end job, a cheating boyfriend and a lack of anyone caring when she’s been missing for days, Ava has to learn this ghoul thing all by herself. Well, she does catch up with some ‘friends’ that soon have her wanting to stake a couple of them.

Filled with diversionary thought patterns, humor and pop culture references, this is a funny set of tales with a heroine that isn’t particularly heroic, but charms you with her near total inability to function normally.

Narration in this story is provided by Celia Aurora de Blas, and she has that balance of ennui and careless toss off of words that suit Ava perfectly well. The asides that she shares are perfectly presented as “filler” info, and her sidetracks into moments that only she can connect until they are explained are wonderfully presented, with her quiet corrections / apologies for bad words that let listeners know that she is presenting HER story to you.

Solidly presented and written with insets of humor and a bit of ‘ghoul rules’, this is a good start for a quick and unique series

About the Book:

That Ghoul Ava: Her First Adventures gives you TWO entertainingly funny Ava tales.

Relive the day she first joined the supernatural community and discover how her bond with the human Lisa Jenkins first began. Also meet regional Psychic, Morgan and the vampire that would get under Ava's skin from their first encounter in a 24 hour super market.

Then, In Ava versus the Rogue Vampire, follow Ava and Lisa on their first real "assignment" on behalf of Morgan when a rogue vampire slips into Vampire Queen Belinda's territory and starts killing indiscriminately. Just don't expect Ava and Belinda to share a hug when it is done...

AudioBook Review:

A switch in narrator changes the feel of Ava a tiny bit in this story, still toting her teenaged human friend Lisa about.  Even as Ava’s narrative is laden with her own particular mix of pop culture, odd correlations and sidetracks, the story moved nicely from the first two.

Here the story moves in to encompass a whole new boatload of supernatural creatures, expanding on the creation stories for vamps and ghouls, and some ongoing antagonism between Ava and Belinda.  I also love the insets of Ava’s ‘insider knowledge’, teasing readers with hints that other favored titles we believe fiction are real.  I’m truly enjoying the writing in this story: a bit of dark humor, a narrative voice that has a mind of its own with asides, pop culture references and more than a few hints that Ava is not the sharpest tool in the shed. With her ‘word a day’ tasks, her actual Ghost writer, and the solid writing that puts Ava on the sofa next to you, sharing her story.

Pamela Lorence is narrating this second installment, and the voice carries a bit of snarky Barbie doll – you have to hear it to understand.  Her inflections, pauses, emotional insets and even her ‘eyerolls are clearly presented and we feel the story as Ava retells it.  A touch darker than the first, with a bit more information and background on the world she is learning about, this was a fun listen.

About the Book:

Ava Birch killed herself and woke up a ghoul with an attitude and a hunger for the dead.

With no manual and very little help coming from the supernatural community, Ava offers her services to the regional psychic. Her newest job? Apparently zombies have been spotted in a small town nearby.

Ava wades in thinking that this job will be a piece of cake...or at least as tasty. Navigating meddling vampires, bothersome witches, and a peculiar case of memory loss...and now her best friend and human companion has up and walked out.

Things go from bad to worse when Ava discovers that there is a force behind these recent zombie sightings that may date back to the time of the Black Plague.

Sometimes a ghoul would just rather stay in bed...or at least her sound proof basement where nobody can hear you scream.
