The Tearoom on the Bay

Eloise had been coming to the little seaside town since boarding school when she was thirteen, and she’s retreated to find herself after a breakup and leaving her PhD programme and work in York.  She’d always dreamed of a tea shop, and by selling up everything in her old life, and a loan from the bank, she’s managed to buy the shop from aunt and uncle, the people who spent the most time with her as ‘family’ in the last half of her years on earth.

Now nearly a year on from taking over the tea shop, Eloise is finally starting to move on from her relationship’s end, and has found a new place, new dreams and a new best friend and community that has welcomed her and the offerings in her tea room.

But not all changes are always straightforward: a handsome stranger with a ‘to go’ mug from her least favorite coffee chain is intriguing: more than she’s mustered up for anyone else she’d met. Of course, we have the knitting / pilates/ community members who are ‘up to date’ on everything and more than willing to interfere with ‘good intentions’. All until the long-gone ex appears on the doorstep, Eloise learns to face her fears and her own history –and decide on her new direction.

The story is surprisingly deep, full of friendship, moments of drama and plenty of heart. There is a ton of history to unpack for Eloise, her new relationship with Ben and her old one with Marcus, not to mention her self-esteem, her own feelings of abandonment and her general timidity and adversity to risk-taking. Full of the scents and love for tea, a bit of good natured ribbing from friends and a community coming together to support and cheer on one they’ve taken to heart – this is a lovely getaway story sure to leave you with a smile.
