I first met Alice Ross with The Cotswolds Cookery Club in the introductory installment of the series. Now that Connie is more settled, and Eleanor has upped sticks and headed to Spain with Kate’s father, she’s juggling two homes, jobs and plenty of new recipes. The ladies have moved on to Spanish foods, so please read on for my review of
The Cotswolds Cookery Club: A Taste of Spain
Set in the Cotswolds and imbued with a serious dose of English charm, three of the ladies from the cookery club return. Connie is still blogging, now writing articles for a magazine about the club, and managing the newsagent’s shop while Eleanor is off in Spain with Kate’s dad. Still staying at Anna’s house in Little Bidington, and accepting of the greyhound Eric’s many phobias. Melody is soon to be a mum, Kate is still frazzled and overwhelmed even as the fissures are starting to show.
Into this group arrives Trish with a moody and unstable teen, a recent divorce and a new child coming, due to her ex’s adultery. Trish has always been one who waits for the other shoe to drop: and unfortunately the whole department dropped on her at once. With a fractured and fractious relationship with her daughter Amber, her willingness to people-please to the discounting of her own desires and needs. Her life centers around making Amber happy, rising above the hurt to deal with her ex and fob off his attempts to have her be the “bad guy’ in sharing HIS baby news, and alieving her anger with chopping, pulverizing and preparing different dishes, she’s in a rut. But with Amber’s sudden interest in a paper route in the town of Little Bidington, Trish goes to the newsagent’s to meet the proprietor and allay her own concerns. And here she meets Connie, learns about the Cookery club and is offered an invite to the next meeting.
With Eric appearing in flight at each ring of the doorbell, the support and friendship offered to Trish is something she desperately needed, and the common thread of the club, and Connie’s friendship in particular help her to feel a part of something. While things with Amber are often tricky and treacherous, visits with Connie at the newsagents, repeated flirty comments from a delivery man, and a particularly electric interaction between Trish and a regular customer, Steven which sets her tongue in knots.
Deceptively simple and surprisingly complex, Trish’s growth and path to finding her feet again in new situations is buoyed and while serious questions arise, Trish’s own new sense of self helps her to make choices that, while scary, reinforce this new phase in her life. Along with gaining the new friends of the Cookery Club, she is realigning and redefining her relationships with her ex-husband and daughter. With stories from the characters continuing to grow and evolve, and more being shared in the close confines of the cooking evenings, I can’t wait for the next. A pefect supportive-friends story that is full of laughter, growth and common situations: as one of my favorite series of this year, I now want ALL the books from Alice Ross.
