About the Book: When Sandro Zapote finds out his little sister needs heart surgery, he is determined to help his parents raise the money they’ll need to help her get better. Sandro’s dad is in the states illegally and must work two jobs to support the family. For one, he picks up roadkill for the department of streets and sanitation and gets paid by the carcass. For the other, he collects scrap metal to recycle for cash. Sandro helps his dad with some of the scrap metal heavy lifting, and one headboard, a weight bench, some gutters, and a few car parts later, Sandro has a brilliant idea: can collecting. Save the environment. Save his family. Maybe even save some spending money for the fabulous, fast new bike he’s been coveting.

Well-meaning and with funny inner monologue, Sandro is the kind of person you can’t help but cheer for. He’s a boy who loves drawing, soccer, and his little sister. And whether he’s fishing a fuzzy, dust-coated turtle out from under his sister’s bed or organizing a school-wide can drive all by himself, Sandro is a smart, self-aware hero, who makes just a few mistakes along the way.

About the Book:  What if your pencil had all the answers? Would you ace every test? Would you know what your teachers were thinking? When Ava Anderson finds a scratched up pencil she doodles like she would with any other pencil. But when she writes a question in the margin of her math quiz, she hears a clear answer in a voice no one else seems to hear.

With the help of her friend Sophie, Ava figures out that the pencil will answer factual questions only – those with definite right or wrong answers – but won’t predict the future. Ava and Sophie discover all kinds of uses for the pencil, and Ava’s confidence grows with each answer. But it’s getting shorter with every sharpening, and when the pencil reveals a scary truth about Ava’s family, she realizes that sometimes the bravest people are the ones who live without all the answers…

How to Train Your Dragon Box SetYou’ve heard of Hiccup and his Dragon Toothless, most probably from the How To Train Your Dragon animated film.  But Cressida Cowell has written an eleven part story that tells the life and adventures of Hiccup the Viking and his dragon Toothless.  I’ve reviewed EACH of the eleven stories in Audio form, all narrated by David Tennant (of Dr. Who fame).  Perfect for boys and girls ages 7 and up, the stories have action, adventure, lessons and are above all, wonderfully entertaining listens.  Truly an adventure to keep those “are we there yet” questions at bay during road trips.   Overall, the series was a 5 star read for me, with narration that is not to be missed. Each title is linked to my review where you can find out about the titles, read the reviews and see where to purchase.  Or, if you are interested in the complete Box Set of paperbacks, just click the photo to be redirected.
