Silver Silence: Psy-Changeling Trinity #1 by Nalini Singh
Reviewing audiobooks is still new to me, so please bear with me as I review the first in the new Psy-Changeling Trilogy from Nalini Singh, narrated by Angela Dawe.
The last audiobook I listened to was book #8 in the Psy-Changeling series. Silver Silence is considered book #16 in that series and the first book on its own.
Let me start by saying, that the plot didn’t confuse me, simply because I have read all the books.
In this book we see more of Silver Mercant, Kaleb Krychek’s senior aide. She is always professional and in control of everything.
And then, there is Valentin Nikolaev, the bear alpha who tries to court her, in the most outrageous ways.
Having read all the books in the series, including the novellas, I’m glad to say that I feel like Ms Singh’s writing has improved . Not that I didn’t like her already, but in this book she establishes new characters and weaves a new plot line.
Someone is targeting Silver, and Valentin is hell-bent on protecting her. Still, he cannot do it openly without undermining the Mercant family’s power. He also has to convince Silver to give him a chance. A chance that leads to heartbreak.
One of the points I love in this book, is the fact that Silver follows the same path in different ways: based on emotions in one and on logic in the other.
Narration for this tittle was provided by Angela Dawe, who has narrated the rest of the Psy-Changeling series. Since the last audio I listened to was pretty far behind, the changes and improvements in the narration were very obvious. She was more into the story and it was more of a performance, rather than simply reading the book, especially when compared to her earlier works. I cannot comment for the secondary characters yet, since the arc is new and we haven’t met most of them before. But the main protagonists were memorable and I had no problem separating their voices. That said, I need to clarify that a big portion of the characters required a Russian accent and Dawe created characters that all sounded genuinely Russian, yet I could always understand them. Her narration follows the emotional arc of the story and it actually made the story even better, bringing the emotion forward in striking ways without overacting. Making me laugh and cry, in all the right parts, adding depth and accessibility to the emotions the story evokes. A great performance.
