Sideswiped: Off the Map #2 by Lia Riley

I came to this author’s work in a roundabout way – and there is nothing that makes me happier! Lia Riley writes romance: romance to fall in love with, and I look forward to each new book from her, be it adult or New Adult.  Read on for my review of the AudioBook version of book 2 in Lia Riley’s Off The Map series.

Picking up where Upside Down left off, Talia and Bran have moved to Tasmania, even though Talia is still stating that their relationship has an expiration date.  Where the first book worked through the instant attraction and their slow acceptance of the feelings between them, this book deals with their relationship and the issues that are cropping up after ditching everything they knew to take this chance.   This is not a series you can jump into – you do have to have an understanding of their path to this place to fully understand and appreciate the progress, and changes, to this point.

A bit of a refocus for both characters, where they both tried to do the ‘unexpected’ and thumbed their noses at the overwhelming pressures and family desires.  In this, they have both come to realize what is important, above and beyond their relationship: schooling, learning new things , and even growing personally as they work on issues in their relationship.  Riley handles this all with clever dialogue, small insets of humor both subtle and overt, and plenty of new discoveries within each character.

And then the twist.  OH THE TWIST.  I won’t say I was entirely happy with the choice, or even understand it…but you know the author has a plan and a purpose that will be revealed. It fit a scenario, if not the one I would have hoped for, but the scope for growth, development and more awwww moments from this story are just endless.

Narration in this installment is again provided by Brittany Uomoleale and Tim Wright. The dialogue and story flow is perfectly suited to a dual narration, and both performances sound appropriate for the characters, adding emotion, laughter, a sense of youth and even depth to the words as they are delivered.  They’ve become the characters here in this narration, and I couldn’t be happier with their crisp, clear and solid presentation.

Lia Riley has created a wonderful escape for the summer sort of read here, with plenty of heart and heat, and just enough tension and drama to leave you wanting more… I can’t wait for the next installment.

It was only meant to last the summer . . .

Talia Stolfi has seen more than her share of loss in her twenty-one years. But then fate brought her Bran Lockhart, and her dark world was suddenly and spectacularly illuminated. So if being with Bran means leaving her colorless NorCal life for rugged and wild Australia, then that’s what she’ll do. But as much as Talia longs to give herself over completely to a new beginning, the fears of her past are still lurking in the shadows.

Bran Lockhart knows that living without the beautiful girl who stole his heart will be torment, so he’ll take whatever time with her he can. But even though she has packed up her life in California and is back in his arms for the time being, she can’t stay forever. And the remaining time they have together is ticking by way too fast. Though fate seems determined to tear them apart, they won’t give up without a fight—because while time may have limits, their love is infinite . . .

About Lia Riley

After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, Lia Riley scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling fourex with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.
