I tend to be someone who appreciates a Christmas Story that feels realistic with characters that have real reasons for not being in the spirit and not always cheerful. Nikki Lynn Barrett has attempted to show the growth to belief in the spirit of Christmas, and the positive effects of getting out of your own head by trying to help others is often a far better option.
Jacob’s sister is ill, and has too many worries about her than to get in the spirit. With not so gentle coaxing, she encourages him to become a Mall Santa, to see the delight of Christmas through the eyes of little believers. Cheyenne is a single mum raising two children, while the children’s father is less than useful or helpful. She’s struggling to put together a Christmas for her kids. Her son is a special child – wanting to help others, even if he doesn’t get something himself.
When Jacob meets Cheyenne’s son, he is impressed that the child wants a present for his mother – not asking for something for himself. Later on Jacob nominates the child for a community award and is able to actually meet the family. Throughout the story the two dance about their attractions, while anger and distrust seem to separate them, and Jacob ends up deserting Cheyenne and her children just as her ex-husband did, But, not wholly unfeeling, Jacob can make a difference and make amends, will he?
The story is somewhat predictable with a happy ending, but sweetly endearing nonetheless. Barrett has managed to bring two damaged and disillusioned people together, and allowed their attraction to fuel the story. A good afternoon’s read with the character of Ben (Cheyenne’s son) being my favorite and the one who seemed to always understand the meaning of Christmas.

Ah, but it's Christmas time and the magic has begun.
When Jacob and Cheyenne meet, neither can deny their immediate attraction to one another. As situations arise that require they spend more time together, their feelings grow stronger and stronger.
