Welcome to my audio book review of the third book in the Searching For series by Jennifer Probst. I’ve read the first two in this series and really enjoyed both, so I was excited to see what a narrated version of the story would present.
Searching for Beautiful
Instantly I was drawn into this story: it’s Genevieve’s wedding day, she’s dressed, the bridal party is waiting, everything is perfect, just as the groom wanted. So why is she panicked? I instantly liked Gen, she was savvy and bold enough to be honest and walk away from the very specific plan. Knowing that marriage to David is NOT what she wanted, she bolted. That takes plenty of guts, and Probst gave us a groomzilla with his obsession with the ‘perfect image’, instantly making her choice understandable in a visceral sort of way. I was thrilled to see her walk away – David is wholly unlikable and far too rigidly concerned with appearances and perceptions that he was draining her liveliness away.
Dashing out the church window, Gen is rescued by her best friend Wolfe: a ride or die sort of guy who always has her back, even though he is consistently denying himself the opportunity of a more than friend relationship with her. He’s broken and damaged – and doesn’t want to burden anyone with his troubles.
I loved the story, adding flashbacks to Wolfe’s past, and Gen’s determination that they can have a love that is bigger than them both – IF they both decide to work on it. And work she does, never allowing Wolfe to forget that she will fight for him and them. These aren’t perfect people – they both have issues to recover from and learn to deal with, and they both don’t expect things to come easily… and it doesn’t. With some danger to Gen, and some serious fighting the attraction on both sides, the emotions are palpable and the moment when they stop fighting the thing that is bigger than them both…. Utterly explosive.
Narration in this story is provided by Madeline Maby. I don’t quite know what didn’t work for me in this performance: the narration was adequate, but not spectacular. Odd pauses, a strange delivery style that felt more ‘classroom read’ than performance and a decided similarity in voices, delivery and even emotional moments made this a less than good listen. This is a case of narrator not quite capturing the story and moments with proper emphasis where needed, as if she was simply reading words and not embracing the lovely moments that the author had infused through the story.
I adore this series: it has high and low points, great characters who consistently deliver their own stories and emotions and plenty of moments to check in with earlier couples. Probst has me hooked, and I’m excited for the next book.
