Continuing my habit of jumping into series when I hear about them, rather than as they start brings me to jump into Katy Evans’ Real series, where I start with the fifth in the series. This new adult rock-star themed romance series intrigues with the cover (something I rarely mention) but engages with the story and characters.
Pandora has spent the past six years hating on her ex: brooding, obsessing and planning revenge. With Mackenna’s band coming back to play a gig in town, she can finally get her own back, if her friend will help. But, the plan backfires and they are caught: she is face to face with her ex once again.
Mackenna and Pandora dated years ago – and he left her broken in heart and spirit. Since then, nothing has quite worked as it should for her, while his band took off and things seemed wonderful for him. Mackenna decides that Pandora won’t be ‘punished’ for her failed prank, but she will be traveling with the band on tour – completely at his beck and call. Not a bad option – because everyone knows that the flip side of the coin from hate is love.
Completely drawing me in, Evans reveals the backstories of Pandora and Mackenna, even as the two fought and bickered over the steaming attraction between them. There’s a more difficult time getting to know and appreciate Pandora: she’s committed to her own anger and resentments, most probably from her mother’s perception of men and her own first experiences. When she ‘gets it’ though, and stands up for herself and learns to believe in and rely on her own emotions and perceptions, she grows by leaps and bounds. Mackenna isn’t a bad guy- most of his brash bad boy act is just that: for the stage, but he’s never really gotten over Pandora and the past years have been filled with events that were not really of their own doing. A mix of heartbreaking and inspiring this is a second chance story that hits every note.
Elizabeth Louise is the narrator for this story, and she is perfectly suited to NA characters: her voice, full of hurt, anger, resentment and fear epitomizes Pandora and her emotions, and she doesn’t overwork the angst. Her voices for other characters are distinct and unique with small changes in pitch, tone and delivery to announce each character and keep them separate. A lovely presentation with solid pacing and sound quality made this a wonderful listen.

The fifth book in the New York Times new adult series that began with Real. When an angry, heartbroken girl is forced to be near her rocker ex-boyfriend, only time will tell if the fire between them will consume them both.
Pandora, the gothic friend of Brooke (Real, Mine, Remy) and Melanie, thought that getting her heart broken by her bad boy rocker ex could only happen once. But now, he's back in town with the biggest concert of the year. Pandora hates him so much that she gets Melanie to come with her and play a prank on him at his gig. But when they are caught by security, and her ex himself is summoned, he decides not to press charges if she'll follow certain conditions. Pandora likes none of his rules, or that he's in charge of her, especially since they seem designed to make sure she's in close contact with him again. But the closeness reignites the passion they once shared, and soon no matter how much she wants to hate him, it's clear she's still hung up on him. And worse: he knows it too.
