Raving About Rhys by Jessica Redland

Allow me to introduce Jessica Redland and her new release.  If you (like me) are a fan of British writers and storytelling, this novella is a wonderful choice for you.

Raving About Rhys

A sweet romance about following your heart and learning to stand up for your own wishes and desires, sometimes with the help and advice of others.

Callie works in a care home, and as a great rapport with the clients and most of the other staff members with the exception of her boss.  While not meant to have favorites, Callie does gravitate to Ruby, a woman who shares advice, support and stories about a grandson, Rhys that Callie has yet to meet.  While, with the exception of her boss Denise, work is going well, Callie’s personal life isn’t so easily navigated.

Callie has a history of settling in relationships: her current boyfriend Tony is older, set in his ways and not particularly interested in more than ‘nights in’ with her.  Honestly, Tony felt, to me, like Callie was a secret: he never stepped up or took her out.  And she thinks he is ‘a better option’. So when Ruby’s raves about the possibly mythical Rhys start Callie wondering, Tony starts looking less acceptable.  But it isn’t until her relationship with Mikey, the gardener, starts to develop into a friendship after a rather uncomfortable situation that she realizes that she deserves more, but still is unwilling to reach for it.

Then, twist one with Tony, followed closely by the appearance of Rhys, and all of Ruby’s raves about him are seemingly true.  Callie has several layers of naiveté to lose in her journey, and more time spent learning what she wants and how to ask for it, but she does come to a better place personally and professionally by the end of the story.

A light, solidly paced read with a well-developed heroine, solidly presented secondary characters and just enough twists to push the plot forward without stretching any of the elements or pacing to the breaking point.  This is a read that will leave you smiling: you can’t help but like Callie and hope for better for her, and when she finally starts to move forward and grow, everyone is happier.

Bubbly Callie Derbyshire loves her job as a carer, and can’t believe she’s finally landed herself a decent boyfriend – older man Tony – who’s lasted way longer than the usual disastrous three months. Tony’s exactly what she’s always dreamed of… or at least he would be if he ever took her out instead of just taking her to bed. And work would be perfect, too, if she wasn’t constantly in trouble with her boss.

When the new gardener, Mikey, discovers her in a rather compromising position at work, Callie knows that her days at Bay View Care Home could be numbered. And if she leaves, who’ll look out for her favourite client, Ruby, whose grandson, Rhys, seems to constantly let her down?

And can anyone in Callie’s life be trusted?
