I think that I had hoped for different with this story: while the synopsis offered me a strong, determined and goal-driven heroine with the promise of some mythology and Vikings – what started as a slow and all too familiar teen romance triad just had me wondering if I would continue.
There is nothing wrong with a teen romance, although the three-way push-pulls of the romance had me frustrated. I wanted to see more of the mythology from the very beginning, Lindsey has a wonderful grasp of the Norse legends, and her deft explanation and incorporation of the legends to make them interesting and apply to the characters and their situation was wonderful.
So we get to the good stuff, the wonderful questing and adventure brought forward from the legends, and the unexpected twists kept me reading on despite the earlier issues. While I can’t say that they completely redeemed the story, I am curious to see just where the author is taking the story next.
See, love triangles in teen stories are pretty much done for me: you need to step forward and end one entanglement before starting on another. And all of the changes that Callie is going through, while understandable, don’t really explain the ongoing push pull with Justin, and her attraction to Ryan. We dance about that over-used love triangle trope, and Callie’s early determination to focus on swimming and a scholarship seem to fall to the wayside early on with her confusion about the two boys in her life.
I am, however, totally curious about the next step – and to see if Callie learns and grows and finds some solid conclusions. This was a promising start with a few hiccups, and the author’s skill and talent in storytelling keep readers engaged.
