One to Watch

If you grab nothing else this summer for your ‘I need this” read – make it this book! Combining reality television with a ‘plus-sized’ fashion blogger with a voracious and loyal following, and just as disturbing, a pile of trolls that she constantly blocks, mutes and tries to otherwise ignore,  But one of her ‘chatty’ posts went viral – when she mentioned the lack of diversity on the reality show – both in the size and color of the women –but also of the men.  Suddenly – she’s been tapped to star in the next season, with the showrunner convincing her that it would work for her message, her brand, and her future career options.

But reality TV is all about the ratings, and it takes quite a bit of courage and self-awareness from Bea to get through it all. From one guy walking away at first meeting, to others joking about her size and cruelly putting her down – the hits keep on coming,  Unsurprisingly, there are also some sweet men there: men who pique her interest even as she’s questioning their ulterior motives.

There’s a ton of growth here for Bea, more for many of the men, and her parents (or mother and step-father) are wonderful and her brothers, despite not really ‘getting’ her are completely determined to ‘make a statement’ with a couple of the men still around. With Bea finding (or thinking) she’s found someone (or more) with potential, ulterior motives, insecurities, and back-stage antics step in to add yet another layer of ‘reality television dramatics.  A clever, deeply emotional and solidly positive story, this is the perfect antidote to the ‘is this real’ thoughts everyone has about these shows, and great to ignore the world and meet a new person worth your time.

Real seen on TV

Bea Schumacher is a devastatingly stylish plus-size fashion blogger who has amazing friends, a devoted family, legions of Insta followers--and a massively broken heart. Like the rest of America, Bea indulges in her weekly obsession: the hit reality show Main Squeeze. The fantasy dates! The kiss-off rejections! The surprising amount of guys named Chad! But Bea is sick and tired of the lack of body diversity on the show. Since when is being a size zero a prerequisite for getting engaged on television?

Just when Bea has sworn off dating altogether, she gets an intriguing call: Main Squeeze wants her to be its next star, surrounded by men vying for her affections. Bea agrees, on one condition--under no circumstances will she actually fall in love. She's in this to supercharge her career, subvert harmful anti-fat beauty standards, inspire women across America, and get a free hot air balloon ride. That's it.

But when the cameras start rolling, Bea realizes things are more complicated than she anticipated. She's in a whirlwind of sumptuous couture, Internet culture wars, sexy suitors, and an opportunity (or two, or five) to find messy, real-life love in the midst of a made-for-TV fairy tale. In this joyful, razor-sharp debut, Bea has to decide whether it might just be worth trusting these men--and herself--for a chance to live happily ever after.
