Christi Barth comes to the blog today with the second in her Bad Boys Gone Good series, a romantic suspense title with men living under Witness Protection. Please read on for my review of
Never Been Good
Let me start by saying, I didn’t read the first in this series – and I most probably should have to get the best understanding of the backstory for the series. But, not having that experience, the story did, once it took hold and things started to develop, keep me intrigued and I did enjoy both Flynn and Sierra as a couple – and the overladen mystery that seemed to draw and repel the two.
Flynn is a bit closed off – and it isn’t until he starts to act on his attraction to Sierra in the most protective ways that he starts to open up and become more fully developed. He’s in a tough place – his safety depends on him being the least like who he was before – and that keeps him on edge. But, expecting some anxiety that was clear and apparent – he turns that into sulking and a touch of surly – something that comes easily when he’s in his own head. Sierra – started out cautious but clearly relatable – her general demeanor was working on Flynn in ways that he turned into fantasy before action. And it was hard not to like Sierra – until she did an about-face a bit more than three-quarters in. Decisions and changes in her just felt as if they were reached for, perhaps overreached, and truly didn’t serve their ‘relationship” or flirtation or connection –whatever term they chose to use in describing the electricity between them.
Overall – even with Sierra’s story told, there was an overlay of angst that never clearly presented as from any particular source, and the real depth to which Flynn was involved with the mob was also not clearly laid forth in this book. Sure – I enjoyed Sierra and Flynn together, and their connection was electric, but something just didn’t feel settled, or perhaps felt missing, as I just feel as if there are pieces I didn’t read that I needed. Perhaps a result of not reading the first in the series – but I’d caution others to be aware of this best read in order book.

Flynn Maguire isn’t really a bad guy. Sure, he worked for the mob, but he ran a legitimate business—on paper anyway—and it paid enough to keep his brother out of the lifestyle. Until they turned on him. Now he’s stuck in Witness Protection, tending bar in Nowheresville Oregon… and pissed the life he knew is gone. The only bright spot? Fantasizing about his quiet, secretive, beautiful coworker.
Sierra Williams is a woman on the run. All she wants now is to settle into small town life… and ignore the brooding, sexy bartender who can’t seem to take his eyes off her. Flynn’s bad-boy vibe pushes all her buttons, but Sierra fell for the wrong man once already. She can’t afford to let her guard down again. Except Flynn’s tough exterior is slowly melting away to reveal the sweet man beneath and their attraction is too strong to resist.
Sierra and Flynn are falling fast, but they’re both keeping so many secrets. The truth could ruin everything… unless a girl who’s a little bad is perfect for a guy who’s never really been good.
