So this is the last of this season in this serial romance from Ruthie Knox…..
Book Review:
I can’t begin to express my frustration with the wait, for this installment in this serialized romance has left us with a Thelma and Louise driving off the edge of the canyon type cliffhanger and there are too many ways to go with this story. That in and of itself is unusual for me: I’m not one who gets aggravated with cliffhangers or needs to know all the answers now, but I am invested in these characters and want to see them overcome their own hang-ups to find resolution.
Roman and Ashley have moved on from North Carolina and are in Pennsylvania coal country, camping at the business of friends of Ashley’s grandmother. Far from their finding some common ground and being able to talk, individually their own stressors are working at them. While Roman is struggling with his relationship with Carmen, his relationship with Ashley and those pesky emotions that are raising their voices and expecting him to feel, Ashley has finally decided to tackle the dozen or so untouched boxes packed and left for her in the airstream.
With all of the raw emotion playing havoc with both of their composures, a quiet moment exploring the abandoned town over a series of underground mine fires gives Roman the courage to share his story with Ashley, who simply empathizes and is there, not shocked or walking away. He also is open enough to see Ashley’s pain, and the similarities between them: surprising him and keeping him off-balance, a situation he has struggled to avoid his entire life.
Ruthie Knox is building the attraction between them even as they both grasp at buffers to halt the inevitable joining, even as they struggle with realizing that they like one another, and find something worth knowing there. It will be a killer to wait until March (Really? March?? *headdesk*) as these are two characters that do everything to be annoying and hard to like, while steadily worming their way into your heart. If you’ve not tried a serialized story before, this is a great one… get it now…. Then read it again when the season resumes in March 2014.
