Rebecca Zanetti comes to the blog with the first of her new Deep Ops series, this one narrated by Roger Wayne
Pippa is being chased by something she just doesn’t quite understand – but she’s found herself in a ‘safe house’ and is starting to be less scared and worried for her own survival. And there’s eye candy – a sexy handsome man moving in next door that starts all sorts of questions. What is Pippa running from – and will Malcolm – the sexy man, be content in his new life off the police force? It takes a bit of build up to bring these two together in a ‘romantic’ sense – for the early moments are simply sexy and hot without much emotional connection between the two. There is much to be unearthed from Pippa and Malcolm – and the threat that means neither will be safe. If you’ve read a Zanetti book before – you know that she can bring the sexy – although we’re most used to it being a slow-burn romance with heat – not so here – and this is truly an 18+ title – but bear with us.
Soon we see the quirky ops forces – meet the different members of the team and come to know Pippa with all of her issues, and the lingering struggles that Malcolm has after being deep undercover for the police for so long. When you see Pippa’s past and the reason she’s got so many trust issues – and meet a high-heeled wearing dog that drinks bourbon and water in equal measure – the humor and fun of this world: not quite comparable to ours but with a little “extra”, and the characters who could be your neighbor – you’ll be hooked. There’s plenty of action and drama to go around as well – so those who want to inhabit a series of tasks with familiar people will get more – I can’t wait for it!
Narration for this story was provided by Roger Wayne – and I will admit that I did some research to see what people thought of his work as it was my first experience listening to it. And I’ll have to say that most of what I found from his previous works were actually either a ‘group” of narrative voices, or a more self-help sort of title. Honestly – the narration was a struggle here – from oddly atonal female voices to a bit of flat, unemotional presentation, there wasn’t a ton that told me I needed to listen to him again. Clear and concise in pronunciation, I was missing the oomph that would have told me there was a connection to one or more of the characters: that’s a quality that is hard to explain – but you know it when you hear it – and sadly, I didn’t. I’d recommend those interested in this title grab the written version and make the characters speak to you as you read on.

Hide. That’s all Pippa can do to escape the terror chasing her. But now that she’s off the grid in a safe house, she finds plenty of interesting things to watch through the window. Like her new neighbor, with his startling green eyes, killer smile, and sexy bad-boy tattoo . . .
Run. Malcolm West is fleeing the hell he unleashed in his last assignment as an undercover cop. A backwoods bungalow sounds like the perfect place to start over. Until he discovers he’s been set up . . .
Fight. Someone’s gone to a lot of trouble to bring them together. No matter how much he resents that, and his own driving needs, Malcolm will have to dig deep and let loose the banished killer inside himself, or Pippa’s fears could come true faster than the flip of a bolt in a lock . . .
