Another one in the list of Blogger Shame reviews, VERY late and it’s all my fault. Apologies to Kensington Books and Rose Pressey as I now present a review for the third title in A Haunted Vintage Mystery series
Haunt Couture and Ghosts Galore
Such a clever and fun series, with Cookie Chanel and her vintage shop and her sidekicks, the ghostly Charlotte and Wind Song the psychic cat. Full of extraordinary circumstances and events, a few madcap moments and a mystery to solve, the fun never quite ends.
Cookie never expected to actually be solving (let alone in the middle of) murder mysteries, and she’s really wanting to spend all of her time working, talking, finding and dressing everyone in fashion that makes them shine, feel good and look pretty. She’s not shallow, but unconcerned with most of the ‘other things’ that surround her. With an event coming up that will help get more word out on her shop, her styling ability and her unique mixing of current and vintage, the last thing she needed was a murder. And of course, the body is a famed fashionista….
Back and forth – Cookie’s interactions with Charlotte and a new character: the very natty Sam in his vintage 40’s wear. Of course, Sam is a ghost too, a PI by trade – what more could Cookie need to solve the murder? Did I mention that Sam sounds very much like a handbook of how to speak like Bogie in The Maltese Falcon? Well, he does. Juxtaposed against Cookie’s southern-tinged one liners, Charlotte’s rather snobby approach to how things are done, and the rather plain spoken Detective Dylan Valentine, with his tiny fascination with Cookie even when murder isn’t top on the list – the story just flies along.
With each chapter giving Cookie a chance to share her style tips, Wind Song playing with Tarot and the Ouija board and the constant input from Charlotte in good and bad ways, the story and the series are clever, unique and perfectly suited for some lighthearted and entertaining fun.
