Who doesn’t love a second chance romance? I know that I appreciate them, and like to see that the characters have grown and matured from their first experiences. No, I don’t expect that they will arrive without baggage, but I would like to see them have some sense.
And that is where Ellie completely lost me. She just couldn’t, or wouldn’t let go of her issues: despite the fact that SHE was the one to run out on Dex all those many years ago. Yes, her fidgety nature was explained, but SHEESH, I really REALLY wanted to smack her more than once in the hopes it would knock some sense into her.
Dex, on the other hand: he was delightful and completely willing to open himself up to her again, even as he tried to guard his heart from her overly active boot heels. Especially since his behavior and support of Ellie were the one constant, through all of her life, that never changed. Sure, he worked hard and achieved success, but he was always there, no matter the hour or the length of absence, he was there to support her. Yes, he had some reservations, and never has let anyone else get close: hoping that she would come to see him as the safe haven.
It was a constant push-pull as Ellie wants to trust in Dex, but also wants to rely on old habits and flee before he gets too close. There was a ton of angst as they would make a step in the right direction then skitter back to worse than before. Sadly, this mirrored real life all too well, and had me anxious and angsty more than I like from a read. All to the author’s credit: emotions should be felt, I just wish the overriding emotion for me was to smack the heroine until she opened her eyes to SEE just what was waiting for her.
I didn’t expect the angst or the strong reactions to the characters and their issues, but I was cheering for them to finally pull their acts together and start to see what delights they would find in each other, IF they decided to trust and take a chance. Finally a romance that is entirely in question, and it was almost until the last pages: even with the smoking hot chemistry and Dex’s unwavering affection.

About the Book:
Ellie Parker is a master at building walls around her heart. In the twenty-five years she’s been alive, Dex Remington has been the only person who has always believed in her and been there for her. But four years earlier, she came to Dex seeking comfort and then disappeared like a thief in the night, leaving him a broken man.
Dex Remington is one of the top PC game developers in the United States. He’s handsome, smart, and numb. So damn numb that he’s not sure he’ll ever find a reason to feel again.
A chance encounter sparks intense desires in Ellie and Dex. Desires that make her want to run—and make him want to feel. A combination of lust and fear leads these young lovers down a dangerous path. Is it possible to cross a burned bridge, or are they destined to be apart forever?
