Fifth Grave Past the Light: Charley Davidson #5 by Darynda Jones

Darynda Jones is back again with the fifth book in her Charley Davidson series – one that is quickly becoming a favorite for me.

Fifth Grave Past the Light

There are few times in my life that I really need something – I’ve decided I need a set of drawers full of t-shirts that mirror the ones mentioned in the book – full of snarky, sharp sayings and bound to get attention. I need the bumper stickers, the uncle who you just know will come get you and say nothing more about it, a rottweiler with snoring issues and….yep, that’s it. I don’t want the naked old dead guy in the car, the houseful of scared dead women in the apartment, or even the dead guy who is sticking around and taking his chances with a one-fanged poodle. Yes, there’s plenty happening in Charley’s life, and when you don’t mention the varied (and multiple) issues that require her time and some answers, you get Reyes. Reyes in all his sexy, son of Satan perfection, and more from Reyes and Charley – their hotter than hell connection has, somehow, managed to up the temp another few hundred degrees – with Charley’s newfound ability to experience all that Reyes feels….. razor sharp cuts from jealousy, desire, heat, ecstasy on the edge of pain (or is that the other way round?) and a seemingly endless supply of emotion that flows between them, sometimes sharp-edged, always providing some sort of answer for Charley – answers to questions that she’s thought of, however momentarily, that could serve her well. But, that’s only about one half of the book – that Charley / Reyes connection, the rest is filled with a discovery (or discoveries) about and by Garrett, a new client’s husband catching Cookie trying to prove his infidelities, a mass grave, a new owner of the asylum where Rocket lives and Charley’s knowing the identity of the arsonist who has burned run-down buildings throughout the city.

This was a far different process in this story, as it took more time with Charley and Reyes, and their building connection, both physical and ‘powers’ related, and the growing interactions between Charley and her sister Gemma. When you add in the fact that most of the ‘investigations’ proceed without a hitch, scratch, bullet hole or danger, it’s a whole new world for her. When you add in a visit from a woman who appears but isn’t dead, with a remote location for a body to be found, and a message from a child ghost hiding under her bed, things are intriguing, fast paced, twisty and with laugh out loud moments, when things get truly dire, Charley’s newly found powers are all that stand between her and inhabiting an entirely different plane. It’s a story loaded with previously undisclosed tidbits and pieces to the puzzle that is Charley and her purpose on earth, and just why Reyes has been placed at her side. Jones has added some heart, plenty of conscience and conflict, and a few more last-minute twists to give Charley plenty of time to obsess over, well, as long as her attention span lasts. Fortunately for readers, there’s plenty more yet to come even with the answers we’ve received, there are questions that will find answers (hopefully) as the series continues. I loved the bit of respite that came with the hotter than hot interludes with Reyes – and the time to breathe, at least for a bit, was a welcome pause in the non-stop action to this point. I’m so ready for the next book, I’m happy to have it queued up and waiting!

Never underestimate the power of a woman on a double espresso with a mocha latte chaser high. - T-shirt

Charley Davidson isn't your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper. She's more of a paranormal private eye/grim reaper extraordinaire. However, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. To further complicate matters, Reyes is her main suspect in an arson case.

Charley has vowed to stay away from him until she can find out the truth...but then dead women start appearing in her apartment, one after another, each lost, confused, and terrified beyond reason. When it becomes apparent that her own sister, Gemma is the serial killer's next target, Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes's help. Arsonist or not, he's the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her.

But he wants something in return. Charley. All of her, body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay.
