Book Review:

The final installment in the series brings us to the conclusion of the revenge plans and brings the series to a satisfying conclusion.  We’ve met several of Sarah’s college friends, and this book brings us more. Alex is successful and determined, he’s built a media empire and has found the perfect opportunity to bring down the archnemesis of the story: Jason Treffen.

Alex is planning to divulge Treffen’s secrets on a highly popular show hosted by Chelsea. Someone that Alex has worked to get close to, in his attempts to manipulate his scenario to his own liking.  There isn’t as much interior second-guessing in this book, so the dialog was more involved and interesting, encouraging the reader’s emotional connection.  There are secrets here too though, and Alex’s desire and choices may be detrimental to Chelsea.

As far as characters go, Alex was until near the very end, my least favorite, and felt as if he was the most manipulative of all we we have met to this point.  His single mindedness despite the potential damage to Chelsea was troubling.  Their connection felt real, even if Alex is fighting a very real crisis of conscience. Yet Chelsea is no wilting flower and she does manage to understand the need for revenge and present options where they both can be satisfied.

These two work well together and the “will he or won’t he” tension about Alex’s decision manage to keep the plot moving forward and displaying the interplay between the characters in ways that is both exciting and realistic.  Hewitt manages to wrap up the story nicely with good pacing and sexy moments that was satisfying and presented a logical end for the series.

“You sound like you hate the man.”
“Hate isn’t the right word. But I’d like to see what he does
with an interview. What you do with it.” He raised his beer bottle
to his lips, his eyes hard.
She straightened, flashed him one of her glittering smiles.
“Well, stay tuned, then. It airs live on March twentieth.” And
without waiting for a response, she turned and walked away from
him, her shoulders thrown back, her chin held high.
Alex watched her leave. For a moment there he’d considered
telling her the truth about Jason Treffen, but then he’d thankfully
thought better of it. It was hardly cocktail party chitchat, and
he didn’t know her well enough to trust her with that particular
powder keg. Not yet, anyway.
She was ambitious, he got that, and tough. He was pretty sure
she had the balls to bring down Treffen on live television if she
wanted to.
The question was, did she? Could he convince her? He possessed
a savage need to see Treffen with his world crumbling
around him while everyone else saw it, too. No longer would the
man fool everyone into believing he was such a damned saint.
They would know him not just as a sinner, but as a devil.
Austin had already exposed Treffen to his family with the help
of Sarah’s sister, Katy. Hunter was working on ousting Treffen
from his law fi rm. And Alex had been charged with showing
the world what he really was: a monster who used the women
he claimed to be saving. Who damned them to lives of shame,
scandal and sin. Everything in Alex ached to see Jason publicly
exposed—and he would do whatever it took to make it happen.
Including use Chelsea in whatever way he could. The woman
was cold. He didn’t feel so much as a fl icker of guilt for using
her. But he did feel a certain amount of frustration. Sexual frustration.
He wanted Chelsea Maxwell in bed, beneath him, those
gray-green eyes turned to molten-silver with desire. He wanted
her haughty little smile to become a desperate begging kiss, to
turn her tinkling laugh into a breathy sigh of pleasure and need.
He wanted to be the one to do it. To shatter her icy control and
make her melt. For him.

About Kate Hewitt

Kate Hewitt wrote her first story at the age of five, simply because her older brother had written one and she thought she could do it too. That story was one sentence long—fortunately, they have become a bit more detailed as she’s grown older.

She studied drama in college and shortly after graduation moved to New York City to pursue a career in theatre. This was derailed by something far better—meeting the man of her dreams who happened also to be her older brother’s childhood friend.

Ten days after their wedding they moved to England, where Kate worked a variety of different jobs—drama teacher, editorial assistant, church youth worker, secretary, and finally mother.

When her oldest daughter was one year old, she sold her first short story to a British magazine, The People’s Friend. Since then she has written many stories and serials as well as novels. In 2007 she received ‘The Call’ from Mills & Boon for her first Harlequin Presents novel, The Italian’s Chosen Wife. Since then she has written over 25 books for Harlequin, and also writes women’s fiction for Carina UK and Lion Hudson Press. She loves writing stories that both tackle tough issues and celebrate the redeeming power of love.

Besides writing, she enjoys reading, traveling, and learning to knit—it’s an ongoing process and she’s made a lot of scarves.

Kate lives in a tiny village on the northwest coast of England with her husband, five young children, and an overly affectionate Golden Retriever.
