Enchanter’s Echo: Mayflower Mages #2 by Anise Rae

My first introduction to this series and author, the alternate universe setting with the magical elements and a wonderful love story made for a great first. Please read on for my review of he new installment in Anise Rae’s Mayflower Mages Series.

Enchanter’s Echo

My introduction to this author and series was a wonderful Hello! Anise Rae’s world-building is exceptional, giving a sense of familiar blended with unique, adding physical, political and social elements that help to provide readers with distinct and immersive impressions.

A world that is mage driven with plenty of mystery, danger and consequence to be found in making the wrong choice. Rae gives us plenty of convoluted connections and divided loyalties as the power shifts from one clan / family to the next, not to mention those characters attempting to survive outside the more ‘official’ groups in the society.  With light and dark magic, inherited territories and a strictly defined series of laws to define and control the country.

Aurora is a wonderful character: she’s an enchantress who wants to stay out of the limelight. Her particular talent is to work with metals and metal-implants, she can fix just about anything. Her hideout is in a junkyard where she is busily repairing items. The items aren’t an issue, but her work on people, particularly metal-enhancements for them is highly illegal.  Not interested in being controlled by or indebted to any of the ruling families, she tries to keep herself off the radar.

When she is confronted with a metal eye by Edmund Rallis, the heir to one of the most powerful territories, their former connection and his ultimate fascination with her starts us on a roller-coaster ride of ups, down, adventure and danger with plenty of ooh moments for the romance.

See, Edmund is a bit of a contradiction: he believes in his family’s power and the rules of the republic, but he doesn’t always feel comfortable in his position. A bit stuck in his ways, Aurora and the love he has for her despite the differences in their outlook, position and willingness to flaunt the law is steadfast. He is steadfast and unwilling abandon his love for her despite these potential pitfalls. I not only adored his loyalty for Aurora but his determination to live up to the expectations of his birth and position, showing a determination and solidity of character that proved just how far he will go for what he wants.

As the two work to unravel the mystery surrounding the newly opened rift in the bond / barrier for Edmund’s family as they try to explore and uncover what is between them. Although I wished that the demarcations between Aurora’s and Edmund’s magic was clearer, it’s either rude or illegal for them to discuss the details.  What does appear, however, is the solid play and interplay between the two as they struggle for answers both to the mystery and their relationship.

Wholly engaging with plenty of imaginative elements put together in new and different ways, with a romance that is wonderfully built and not overly angsty despite the characters being more different than alike at first, I couldn’t stop reading and now have to get the first in this series.

Edmund Rallis, heir to the Rallis senate seat, has spent months hunting down his errant enchantress. He’ll play every game he knows to win her back and entice her to share the secrets she hides. But he’s inadvertently put her on the frontlines of a new game, one with an opponent who’s determined to destroy Rallis Territory and drive the Republic toward war. About Anise Rae

Anise Rae spends her days dreaming up alternative realities where people just like her (and you) have magic, worlds populated with heroines who dare to stand up to society’s expectations and be true to themselves and heroes with plenty of savvy to fall in love with such brave women.

Though she lacks real supernatural powers, she believes the true magic within us is our own creativity – a gift we must nuture as frequently as possible. It’s why her house is littered with crayons, craft kits, legos, yarn, paper, pens, and books. Or it could be because she hates to clean.

She lives in the suburbs of Atlanta with her two children and a dog with an amazing ability to sniff out hidden stashes of dirty socks. They also litter her house.
