Dirty Rowdy Thing: Wild Seasons #2 by Christina Lauren

Returning again with another in the Wild Seasons series by Christina Lauren, we get more New Adult angst and issues with the story of Harlow and Finn in

Dirty Rowdy Thing

A last fling after graduation from university, and Harlow, Mia and Lola are in Vegas.  A loud party in the room next door introduced Harlow to Finn, and the electric insta-lust that they shared.

But, a wild moment of spontaneity led to their marriage, and a night of unbridled honeymoon delights.  Complete opposites, Finn is a fisherman and feels very much responsible for the future of the family business. Harlow is dealing with some family issues, but her lifestyle and approach to life and security couldn’t be more different than Finn’s. A touch of a control freak, Harlow is just coming to realize that she can’t control or fix everything, and Finn seemed to be the perfect diversion.

The short marriage was quickly ended, and both head off to their own lives. Until Finn turns up and instantly starts to push Harlow to distraction.  These two really believe that they can’t stand one another, that they are too different – but they are so similar that they just combust in each interaction.  From off the charts scorching sexual tension, through the bickering and banter, and into the slow reveal of affection and trust, their relationship was a delight to watch.  And even when things went pear shaped, and the moments are truly heartbreaking, the story is impossible to put down.

Shayna Thibodeaux is the voice of Harlow (and the other female characters) and I loved her sense of timing and delivery. Using the text to advantage, she manages to imbue her performance with emotion and the other subtleties of communication (pauses, emphasis and pitch and tone modulation) that enhanced the story without overshadowing.  The male performances were from Sebastian York, and his voice would make the telephone directory interesting.  With subtle shifts in accent and delivery, along with what felt to be a clear visual of the characters and their place in the plot, his performances were solid and the timing impeccable.  Conversations and the bickering felt as if you were observing them firsthand, and the use of two narrators added a layer of audible interest that moved the story forward nicely.

Christina Lauren has created a cast of characters in the Wild Things series that are memorable and funny, easy to imagine as your set of friends, and providing just enough angst to keep the tension without overdoing any one element.  I’ve had stories from Mia, Ansel, Harlow and Finn, and I can’t wait for Lola to get her turn.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Bastard, Beautiful Stranger, and Beautiful Player, Book Two of the brand-new Wild Seasons series that started with Sweet Filthy Boy—a story of friends, love, and lust.

Despite their rowdy hookups, Harlow and Finn don’t even like each other...which would explain why their marriage lasted only twelve hours. He needs to be in charge and takes whatever he wants. She lives by the Want-something-done? Do-it-yourself mantra. Maybe she’s too similar to the rugged fisherman—or just what he needs.
