Demons, witches, weres and laughs all combine in the fifth installment of the Demon Hunting series from Lexi George. The first I’ve read in this series or from this author, please read on for my review of
Demon Hunting with a Sexy Ex
With two main characters suffering from their past connections, a demonic presence that is threatening all they hold dear, and hormones and pheromones running amok, there was no way not to just laugh out loud through much of this book. Cassie is a witch, centuries old, with a problem: half demon and losing her control and oomph from her magic, she’s trying to live an uncomplicated life in the little southern town. But, Duncan Dalvani, a demon hunter and the love of her life until he disappeared without a glance back leaving her heartbroken, is in town. No, scratch that, he’s building a house on his own land, directly across from her own home. Worse still, he seems to be everywhere, his desire for Cassie and his never-ending quest to reclaim her heart makes him an eager puppy, always underfoot.
When you add in another being whose rage turns him into an ogre, mix his attraction for a female demon hunter, and her confusion (and more than hilarious attempts to push him away) there are plenty of romantic missteps tossed into the mix. And while the ‘hunting’ is actually pretty slow, the interactions (the hunters are often interacting with information from a ‘wired in’ dictionary that frequently misses nuance) are often hilarious as defined meanings meet actual use of words, confusing and confounding them frequently. For me, being new to this series, it was the interactions and cleverness in the twisted communication sang out solidly. Action-wise, there are some questions affecting the local werewolf clans, a rogue hunter turned demon whisperer, and a kidnapping that could lead to Cassie’s demise, if not for Duncan’s actions, even as he is determined to get her to take another chance on him.
As an introduction to the story, the slower pace and character focus helped me in putting characters in place, and understanding the overall plot. Duncan was adorable, and Cassie most certainly held onto her hurt feelings with an iron grip, often showing her own conflicts: softer on the inside with questions and concerns that spew out with a sharp tongue and attitude. A story that certainly had me interested in the rest of the series, starting from the beginning.

Southern-fried demons. Hell-raising rednecks. And one killer ex-boyfriend...
This witch is on fire
Cassandra Ferguson McKenna, aka the Witch of Devil River, has only one thing to say to her demon-hunting ex: We are never ever getting back together. Sure, Duncan Dalvhani may be the hottest thing this side of the Mason-Dixon line. He’s got a body to die for—which is hard to ignore when he skinny dips in her river every day—and swears he loves her. But as a demon hunter, Duncan is the sworn enemy of a demonoid sorceress like Cassandra. Give him another chance to break her heart?
But when Cassandra is attacked by a werewolf, Duncan not only comes to her rescue, he helps her take on a band of magic-drunk moonshiners, fire-breathing demons, shifty shapeshifters, and a pet Sasquatch named Sugar. Welcome to Alabama. But when a portal opens up for even more hellaciousness, Cassandra has to admit that Duncan is slowly opening her heart—to a whole new world of unearthly delights...
