Death of a Pumpkin Carver

Set in Bar Harbor, a favorite summer destination when I lived up north, even with picking up a series partway through, I was excited to get into this one.

Food editor of the local paper, Hayley’s life is moving along nicely and she’s excited for the upcoming holiday until her ex-husband, Danny, arrives on the pretext of spending time with the kids.

Hayley doesn’t believe him, no matter how excited the kids are, and she turns out to be right when Danny’s Uncle Otis, the moonshiner is found bludgeoned.  Sure enough, Danny is hiding the fact that he owes money to some Boston mobsters who won’t give up until they get their cash back.

Filled with plenty of twists, humor and some wonderful stories that reminisce and share wonderful fall recipes, the story whips forward nicely – with wonderful dialogue and description. While I could have used a few less references to the discord that ended the marriage, Danny did manage to show his disreputable side in ways that wholly supported Hayley’s position, even as she did her best not to put the kids in the middle.

I truly don’t know how I missed this series – and with 7 earlier installments,  I have plenty to catch up on!

This is the perfect read to toast with a pumpkin martini or two…. (recipes included)
