Dangerous Places: A Roman Cantrell-Nikki Holden Mystery #1 by Elaine Raco Chase with an excerpt!

Welcome to my review of Dangerous Places by Elaine Raco Chase, the first in her Roman Cantrell-Nikki Holden Mystery Series.  Another read in one sitting title, this is a title that even those who aren’t huge mystery fans (myself included) can enjoy! Please read on for my review and an excerpt from the title!

Book Review:

There is a reason why I’m addicted to the movies from the 1940’s: dialogue. No matter the actors, these were stories with plot and detail, low on sex, high on innuendo and dialog that is perfectly written, timed and delivered. I’ve said it before, and the same holds true, Elaine Raco Chase has mastered dialogue, with timing, humor, and the play of give and take so necessary to a conversation.  In Dangerous Places, all of these pieces fall into place with a wonderful mystery, a cast of secondary characters that range from distasteful to delightful and two star players that show influence (noted by the author) of Dashiell Hammett. .

Nikki is a reporter, with a reporter’s determination to dig deep and follow a lead, without the moral confusion that would prevent her from using all advantages at her fingertips to get an edge, a lead or an intro to her target.  Intelligent, determined, single-minded and with the ability to think fast on her feet to readjust when needed, she’s also loyal, kind hearted and running from her past. Not overtly, but her refusal to get ‘involved’ and her ‘fully furnished rental’ that lacked personal touches all show her refusal to live, or deal, with her past by running the other way. Her life has been a series of unfortunate events that also brought her some particularly loyal friends: her boss, his wife, her researcher and a former Mafia don now turning his hand to restaurateur and gourmet chef, complete with cookbook and you-tube videos.

Roman is ex-army, turning to private investigation / security after a stint as a mercenary, only returning to the US to find his younger brother. Now with a reputation for excellence and connections at every level of law enforcement and government, he’s been tasked to find a ‘runaway teen’ by her mother, a billionaire mogul who is as reclusive as Hughes with the personality of Helmsley.  But, Nikki has the runaway Marcy in her company, patiently babysitting the slattern who is determined to shock at every moment as she lusts over (and with) the very married Basque Jai-Alia superstar with “the libido of a guppy”.

So the chase ensues, or I should say chases: Roman of Nikki, Nikki of the story, and the secondary characters all feeding information, some questions of misdirection and the occasional odd clues about just what is important to them, the story moves quickly from one moment to the next, never losing steam.  Roman and Nikki are wonderful together – from early attraction that is bandied about like a game of hot potato, to their finally coming together to share stories and information, you can see the growth of the relationship and  the balance that these two very alpha personalities come to find together.  It won’t be easy, but Nikki and Roman have something special, and with a don willing to feed and guard an entire hospital ward, they’ll never be 100% alone.  A wonderful read that will bring readers the feel of a 1940’s film, with plenty of laughs and a great mystery to solve.

The Seven Deadly Sins have never been so Deadly.

Or so much fun!

Meet Nikki Holden - she may know 140 characters but social media is not her venue. She's an investigative reporter with more enemies than friends - and her friends are very shady.

She's on the trail of a stunning story at Pleasure Island. And she doesn't mind using her pick pocket talents or a well-aimed champagne cork or even a pair of 38's (boobs not guns) to get her story.

She's tenacious, sarcastic and an ex-con.

Meet Roman Cantrell - ex-army ranger who couldn't stop fighting, went off the grid doing Black Ops but came back to the US to start an international security firm.

He keeps popping into Nikki's life at the most inconvenient times.

And he knows too much about her past.

He also knows she's not capable of good behavior.

Is Roman looking for the person Nikki's ...kidnapped? Or is he looking for a more intimate connection.

One thing for sure - They're both heading into murderously Dangerous Places

HEADER - Excerpt IAI

“What if you got here and found another penis in the room? Did you ever think of that?”

Roman thought about that for a second then grinned. “Nope. But you’ve got one now.” His finger crooked into the deep V of her nightshirt and pulled it down. “Just inspecting your glorious assets.”

Nikki slapped his hand away, gripping his torso tighter with her thighs. “Since we’re doing a tit-for-tat check.” She pushed up the sleeve on his burgundy golf shirt to reveal the tattoo on his left bicep. “Ahh….a knife and a banner: death before dishonor.”

He easily flipped her over on her back. “Curious were you?”

Arms folded across her breasts, Nikki looked up in defiance at his towering form. She could see the laughter in his eyes along with something else. Something more intimate. Something dangerous. “Just as curious as you were to see if I’m a real redhead.”

Roman made an exaggerated wipe of his brow and winked. “Didn’t doubt it for a minute.”

Her hands locked around his shoulders, pushing him sideways back onto the mattress. Nikki tapped his watch. “You did prove rather useful this morning.”

“As an amorous alarm clock?” He caught her smile as she left the bed.

“Exactly. I have people to see and places to go this morning,”

Roman sat up. “Sounds like we’re going to have a busy day.”

“The hell we are!”

“Lady, I’m sticking to you like super glue.”

“Even that has a solvent.” Nikki looked over her shoulder and grinned. “By the way…everything about me is real, Cantrell.” She pulled her nightshirt off and tossed it at him before disappearing into the bathroom to his accompanying wolf whistle.

About Elaine Raco Chase

I write sassy, sexy, LOL contemporary romance novels. Often they start with “love at first sight” (a few of my friends write “love at first bite!”) I was thrilled read some wonderful stats: Match.com – 59% of men believe in love at first sight!
Prevention Mag. says 60% of Americans believe in love at first sight!
Prevention also noted that women see brooding men as significantly more
sexually attractive than happy guys! Is this the “bad-boy?”

I was never sure of “love at first sight” until my dad told me he fell for my mom as he watched her chase her dog down the street! I told him that was the silliest thing I ever heard they hadn’t even said a word to each other! He winked and said “sometimes you just know”…they were married for 57 years. Hubby and I are headed for 43 years this October: he said it was “lust at first sight” – yeah! That works too!

So let’s say “attraction” at first sight and then what reviewers call the “slow burn” are the core of my contemporary romantic comedies. Some more erotic than others, but all with characters that are so believable they’ve received fan mail!

Her bestselling romance novels: Rules of the Game, Dare the Devil, Double Occupancy, Lady Be Bad, Calculated Risk, Video Vixen, Designing Woman and Special Delivery are on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Smashwords, Itunes, Blio, Sony, XinXii, and All Romance. All have been updated and expanded.

When she’s not writing, or rewriting, Elaine also hosts a weekly radio show on Thursdays 8PM EST: Author’s Corner at Triangle Variety Radio.

I’ve read several of ERC’s books already and enjoyed every single one of them. I’m reading this particular book right now, and it sure seems to be just as fun as my previous reads from ERC. This review seems to be right on the money!

    • I’ve done her catalog in Audio – I don’t think I’ve had any reads until this one – but not being a huge mystery fan it kept me interested and intrigued. Mostly, I think, because her dialogue is so well-crafted and adds humor, snark, sass and heart
      thanks for stopping in!
