Control by Charlotte Stein

I grabbed this title based on the main character, Maddie, owning an erotic bookshop, and her concerns that her sexuality is ‘outside’ the norm. What I got was so much more than what I had hoped for:  Maddie is free and enlightened, yet still has her own concerns about her desires that surround control, taking and giving.

She needed an assistant in her shop, and both Andy and Gabe appear ad are perfect for the job: both with different strengths.  Andy is a bad boy, an utter and complete prat without a ton of redeeming qualities, but Maddie loves his confidence, swagger and apparent lack of humility.  Gabe is quiet and retiring, there is something there that speaks to Maddie’s nurturing side.

Broken and damaged is how I would describe these characters: each has secrets and shames that they work to overcome, but it takes them willingness to explore and relinquish the worry that their desires are “odd” before you see a real growth in the relationships and the characters.  A touch on the sad side, the characters are freer with their bodies and their fantasies than their innermost feelings, and how free they are.  Scorching hot, dirty talking sex that flirts with Domination and submission with the occasional foray into subjugation, the characters all learn to relate to one another and take strength from the oddly satisfying triangle.    I wasn’t sure that the dynamic between Maddie and the two men as she dealt with them singularly would work when all three were in close proximity, but as they all get more comfortable and accepting of their own reactions and needs, they also seem to relate better to one another.

Real characters that are easy to engage with, and in a turn from most erotica that I have read: the dominant alpha isn’t always the winner in all situations: nice guys can and do get the girl.  Charlotte Stein has written a clever story sure to please fans of erotica, with just enough of a twist to the characters and their pairings to be wholly fresh and new.  Not a book for those who cringe at spanking, humiliation, cross dressing or dirty talk, this takes a super-hot read and makes it even more engaging with characters with heart and solid personalities.

Will she choose control or just let go?

When Madison Morris wanted to hire a shop assistant for her naughty little bookstore, she never dreamed she'd have two handsome men vying for the position—and a whole lot more. Does she choose dark and dangerous Andy with his sexy tattoos? Or quiet, serious Gabriel, whose lean physique and gentle touch tempt her more than she thought possible?

She loves the way Andy takes charge when it comes to sex. But the turmoil in Gabe's eyes hints at a deep well of complicated emotions locked inside. When the fun and games are over, only one man can have control of her heart.
