What is your idealized ‘first unplanned step’ when breaking out of a rut? What if you are a 40 something librarian, more than slightly Christmas obsessed, and just been dumped by your long-term-this-is-the-man-to-marry boyfriend? Another in the long list of titles I’ve had forever to read, please welcome Sue Watson as she offers up a possible option in
The Christmas Cake Café
Christmas-Obsessed librarian Jen has spent her entire life trying to make every Christmas more perfect than the last, and when her relationship ends, not with a bang but a whimper, she is facing a holiday with her cat and the ability to do as she pleases for the first time in forever.
When her half-sister Jody suggests a working holiday in the Alps for snow, skiing and men, Jen is nonplussed. More digs from Jody, the recognition that in the last years she has lost her sparkle and joy, and the years of deferring to an ex who was an arse, and she relents.
With missing luggage, traveling companions that believe alcohol is a food group, and spectacularly mismatched and haphazard outfits, Jen’s first moments aren’t spectacular. But something wonderful, a ski instructor named Jon seems to like her, and is happy to see her happy.
Light and fun, the story does have its repetitive moments with Jody harping on Jen. I do think she means to shake up Jen’s life and get her to prove she isn’t stuck, old and scared, but these moments do wear. Secondary characters (Jody’s friends) are simple backdrop, while the relationship between Jen and Jody does deal with some long-standing issues. And while the relationship with Jon was sweet, it also proceeded far too quickly for comfort considering Jen’s history. But there are funny moments and situations, as well as some lovely imagery. I just wanted a bit more show than tell, and some more development from Jen overall. Still a great escape for those readers who need a little sparkle in a place far away.

Heart-warming and hilarious, a story that will make you laugh, cry and bring a smile to your face. Get ready for another deliciously amazing Christmas treat from Sue Watson....
As the Prosecco chills and Bing Crosby croons, Jen Barker just knows that her long-term boyfriend is about to propose. But instead of a diamond ring nestled in her champagne flute, Jen finds cold flat rejection. Her once perfect life and dreams of a husband and family seem even further from reach.
A working holiday to the Swiss Alps with her younger sister Jody might not be the Christmas Jen had it mind, but it offers her the chance to recharge her batteries and recover from heartbreak.
When Jen meets handsome ski instructor Jon Zutter her hopes for a happy-ever-after seem within her grasp again. Jon is kind and gorgeous and as they bond over Sachetorte at the picturesque Cake CafE, Jen thinks he might just be her perfect man. But a relationship with him comes with a catch - and there are some things even cake can't fix.
As the snow falls and Christmas approaches, could this be the place that restores Jen Barker's faith in love?
