Celebrations and Confetti At Cedarwood Lodge: At Cedarwood Lodge #1 by Rebecca Raisin
I wanted some more chick lit type romance in my life, and the first of Rebecca Raisin’s At Cedarwood Lodge came available, so I grabbed it. Set in New Hampshire (I used to live there) and focused on a rebuild of a life by heroine Clio Winters, it was an intriguing journey. Please read on for my review of
Celebrations and Confetti At Cedarwood Lodge
Returning to her small hometown of Evergreen, New Hampshire, Clio has purchased the once grand Cedarwood Lodge, an event site with rental vacation cottages. Right off the top, I had to recheck twice that this story was, in fact, set in the states. The story is written in British English, and while that provided no great hardship for me, it was distracting. Secondly, the setting. It’s a very generic scene, one easily gleaned from pictures. Mountains are plentiful, as are lakes in NH, but the lack of more than a typical mountain scene or a small isolated town, there was nothing in the story that tied it to NH or any particular place. A bit of a letdown for me. But I digress: the story really does focus on the characters, Clio in particular, and her revising of her life.
Clio is a fairly typical wedding planner sort: a die-hard romantic for anyone but herself, always wanted to make a splash in the ‘big city’, planned her own wedding from childhood, boundless energy and a real desire to celebrate love in all its forms. Unfortunately, she also has a bit of meddlesome in herself, and this led her to a spectacular and very public groom at the altar without a bride, now playing out in the tabloids. Hence her leaving New York and heading home She wants to make Cedarwood a destination again, too young to have understood why the former owners closed shop.
Now with a 6 week deadline, massive renovations and a mother who has little liking for her new venture, she’s pulled 12 ways from Tuesday to make a 50th wedding anniversary for the most adorable elderly couple in the world. In her hometown. With her best friend who is heartbroken by his ex wife, her first love that has two adorable but threatening children, an Australian project manager who simply oozes sex and more setback than you can imagine, the twists and turns are major. And, she’s not quite confiding in her bestie from New York, as she could.
Clever twists, plenty of description and the aforementioned adorable couple celebrating their very palpable and sweet connection, the story reads quickly, if not feeling entirely complete. While we do get through the first major event (after much anxiety) the plans for further events, a budding relationship with her best friend and new landscape designer, the connection to her now absent project manager and the arrival of her bestie from New York, not to mention her own mother’s story about the lodge and the questions there……
Intriguing and well-paced, I’m curious to see where Clio goes from here, and just how well her plans for Cedarwood will proceed. With a few unsettling bits regarding the lack of actual setting development and the use of British English for a story that is obviously based in the US – the story was still enjoyable. Sure to intrigue people wanting a bit of a rebuild your life tale with a main character that is likable and a bit scattered.
