Bonds of Justice: Psy-Changeling #8 by Nalini Singh
My first audiobook review is for another title from Nalini Singh, the eighth book in her Psy-Changeling series. Please read on for
Bonds of Justice
This book revolves around Max Shannon, a cop, and Sophia Russo, a J-Psy. You have guessed correctly. J stands for Justice.
Max, who we briefly met in Mine to Possess, has a natural shield. No Psy can get into his mind. Add his stubborness and determination into the mix, and you have one of the best cops on the force, with a high solve rate.
Sophia Russo is peculiar. In a lot of ways, and while the Js have a tendency to stick together, more than the rest of the designations, it doesn’t offer all the advantages we would expect.
Brought together to solve a string of murders that are altered to look like suicides. There’s only a few catches: their temporary employer is Nikita Duncan and someone will go to extremes to stop them from solving the case.
What I enjoyed the most in this book, was the difference in the perspective that we’ve not seen before. I cannot say more, because, spoilers and I won’t do that.
Narration for this title is provided by Angela Dawe. I’ve listened to previous audiobooks in this series, but hadn’t thought about reviewing them, so I found it strange that I didn’t immediately remember her voice. But, that was a small concern as most of the titles focus on different characters, and this was two more. Making her performance stronger was a sense that I’ve always had that Dawe is interested in the title she’s performing, and is engaged with it – making listening that much more engaging. What I did have difficulty with was the distinct voices for each character, there seemed to be some hesitation before a voice took hold, or if there was a break taken and restarted. Those small hesitations in character voices were distracting, although once established they felt very appropriate to the characters and action. Most striking were her choices for Sophia: from the cold and almost robotic Psy-tone to the more natural tones that developed as her character progressed.
Of course I’m going to keep on reading (or re-reading) and will also be listening and reviewing more from Nalini Singh in this Psy-world.

About the Book:
Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in New York Enforcement. Born with a natural shield that protects him against Psy mental invasions, he knows he has little chance of advancement within the Psy-dominated power structure. The last case he expects to be assigned is that of a murderer targeting a Psy Councilor's closest advisors. And the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual of ways is a Psy on the verge of a catastrophic mental fracture.
