Her Best Laid Plans by Cara McKenna

Today, thanks to Harlequin, I have a new release from their Cosmo Red Hot Reads collection: Her Best Laid Plans from Cara McKenna.

Book Review:

A trip to Ireland after the end of a long-term relationship is to serve as Jaime’s time to find a new direction and start to work on her own life.  Early on, I had a couple of problems with the timeline on this one: Jamie’s age is confused and had me wondering.  She states that she was in a 4 year relationship with Noel, left school to support him emotionally and financially, and says she is 22. Then nearly the next sentence, she mentions Conor’s age and states there are 3 years between her and his 28.  It was one of those strange things that seem minor, but kept me wondering about her for the rest of the story.

Conor, for his part was delightful: working as a bartender in his father’s pub and struggling to save money to start university in a few months: his desire to get his life on track and move forward was admirable.  His explanation of this to Jamie, who also was feeling as if she was stagnating resonated, but their connection was so instant and described with such palpable emotion that I was pulled from her stated reservations and tossed into the relationship.

I will say that they did have an interesting dynamic, and while the deeper emotions weren’t spoken, the instant attraction was so much like a first crush.  Conor has an interesting way with words; and their first connection was steamy and cleverly written.  Told almost entirely from Jamie’s perspective, the story often seems to perseverate on her fears of being asked to give up something, a point missed when a relationship should be about communication and compromise that both parties can live with.  She isn’t without her own dreams though: she does hope that the stars will align and let them meet when both are in a place that will allow their relationship to develop.

Quick and fast with several steamy scenes that mix abandon with determined discovery, the story managed to keep me engaged and intrigued until the end: a nice, if reasonably predictable conclusion will leave a smile on your face and feed your need for happy endings.

Experience Ireland—the dramatic beauty, the warm hospitality...and the smoking-hot local guys!

Imagine nursing a pint in a cozy, authentic country pub, far from Cork City’s busy pulse. Getting here took you a plane, bus, taxi, and...erm, bicycle. But just as you’re resigning yourself to drinking beside gray-haired farmers, you see him—a man with the looks and charm to soothe any heartbroken girl.

He’s your bartender. Your really, really gorgeous bartender.

For American Jamie Webb—recently dumped and housesitting for two weeks—Connor Kelleher is like a six-course feast after a 23-year starvation diet. But it’s gotta be casual. She’s just begun re-routing her life after an extended, man-related detour. Still, a sexy romp (or twenty!) with Sexy McBartender?

But what about when Jamie's best-laid plans for no future plans with any man begin to change?
