Audiobook Review: One Way or Another by Elaine Raco Chase

Who doesn’t love to be read to? I’ve always been a fan, so an audio version of a book is just the thing to relax with, to clean the house by, or even to use as commuting entertainment.   Today I am thrilled to present One Way or Another  by Elaine Raco Chase.  And, if you are in the mood to hear the author commune with other “booky” folks – check out her show this Thursday at 8 EST – The Author’s Corner  at Triangle Variety Radio – I will be there along with other members of the Book and Trailer Showcase discussing all of the new changes to the eMagazine, and of course – books!

Title: One Way or Another     Author: Elaine Raco Chase    Stars:  5

About the Book:    One Way or Another was the original title of my second novel, Tender Yearnings, number 19 in the Dell Ecstasy Romance line published in 1981. It went into a record second printing after just one month!

I actually wrote the novel because I was told not to – that romance readers didn’t want books where the heroine had a family, especially when they appeared in the same novel. How silly! So Abigail Wetherby was born, along with her mother and sister. Not only that, but my hero, Nick Maxwell came equipped with a father who fell in love with Abby’s mom.

When I wrote this story, credit cards were just beginning to grow, the economy was still in trouble, gas cost a fortune, and computers were run by punch cards. I even mentioned the latest craze: having a home computer that printed on green and white paper! (I resisted getting a computer until 1988!)

I hope you will fall in love with this “contemporary classic” and enjoy a time capsule of the way we were.

Meet Abby, computer killer and prickly proprietress of the Cove Bookshop in Camden Cove, Virginia. She’s a woman with many secrets, a mother and sister she fiercely protects, and a secluded, quiet life that has become a bit boring.

Enter Nick Maxwell, a man determined to bring Abby to her knees and into his arms – but he had more than a few secrets of his own.

My Review:

Here is an audio-book pairing of Elaine Raco Chase’s work with the voice of Janina Edwards providing the narration.  And I have to say – this is another winner!  Edwards’ voice is perfectly modulated, with variation in tone and tenor to illustrate the various character voices and points of view throughout the book.  This smooth narration enhances the well-written story, and provides a great listening experience.

The story is clever, and it is interesting to remember the changes from the early computer days with punch cards, and ATM’s as a relative new innovation.  Aside from those little pieces of technology that date the piece to an era that is not entirely 21st century, humans haven’t changed that much and the author’s character development and portrayal of their emotions reinforces that fact.

Written with a deft hand and a clear ear for conversational style and nuanced emotional impact from well-defined facial impressions and word choice, the characters of Nick and Abby are as real as any two people you may meet in the grocery store.   In addition, their romance is sensual and feels very natural, with all of the misunderstandings that naturally appear between two people who often act as if they are reacting to their past rather than their present.  The heat level in this book comes not from erotically detailed scenes, but is more depicted in sensual phrasing that is not explicit, and provides the reader with an “oh that is so romantic” sort of momentary warmth.

This is an audio book that will keep a smile on your face, with an ease and familiarity with the characters and their families that feels like coming home.

I received a copy of the audiobook from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

About the Author:

I write sassy, sexy, LOL contemporary romance novels. Often they start with “love at first sight” (a few of my friends write “love at first bite!”) I was thrilled read some wonderful stats: – 59% of men believe in love at first sight!
Prevention Mag. says 60% of Americans believe in love at first sight!
Prevention also noted that women see brooding men as significantly more
sexually attractive than happy guys! Is this the “bad-boy?”

I was never sure of “love at first sight” until my dad told me he fell for my mom as he watched her chase her dog down the street! I told him that was the silliest thing I ever heard they hadn’t even said a word to each other! He winked and said “sometimes you just know”…they were married for 57 years.  Hubby and I are headed for 43 years this October: he said it was “lust at first sight” – yeah! That works too!

So let’s say “attraction” at first sight and then what reviewers call the “slow burn” are the core of my contemporary romantic comedies. Some more erotic than others, but all with characters that are so believable they’ve received fan mail!
