A Gorgeous Mess: The Bent Zealots MC #2 by Layla Wolfe

Have you ever met something that was so wrong it was so utterly right? The first moment of a frozen hot chocolate, or a spiced hot chocolate that has a little bite from the inclusion of cinnamon and peppers? That sort of moment when everything you are says that something shouldn’t work so well – but it does anyway, and you want more. That is exactly the tone that Layla Wolfe has struck in her Bent Zealots MC series, and the latest book in the series,

A Gorgeous Mess

is ringing all the bells in perfect harmony. These are bikers: so the language carries the ability to make sailors blush, the men are broken and not always nice people, there is violence and gore, and some incredibly hot scenes that focus on power shifts between the two men in this developing relationship. And still, this is a male-male love story, full of heart, insecurities, revelations and emotions.

I would suggest that you read book one, A Dangerous Reality first: information about the background of the club, as well as an introduction to one of the main characters in this story, Ormand, is important to really understand some background, even as Wolfe does make efforts to provide some information along the way. At any rate, whether or not you’ve read the first, you will find yourself unable to resist it.

In this story, Ormand is given his chance at something more than his usual, and strangely empty encounters that have been his stock in trade for the last few years. A badge bunny, his predilection for dominant men in uniform has damaged his self-esteem. Ormand is hard not to like: by far the least ‘biker’ of all the men in the Zealots, his exotic Spanish looks, his ability to read people and his work in special effects prosthetics add depth and body to his character. But it is his heart, the little boy lost under the good humor, thoughtful comments and assurance in his abilities as a solid power bottom that bring light and make him someone you want to know.

Anson on the other hand is a ptsd-suffering, hard as nails somewhat isolated and isolating man: a mercenary for a US contractor in Afghanistan, he has serious conflicts in his life: from his early years as a half-Navaho boy on the reservation to the shame about his sexuality, and his boat-load of anger doesn’t help.  Riding the ragged edge of control, deep within there is a man who needs love and acceptance: but mostly from himself.  With a daughter he barely knows whose mother died as a result of illness and drug addictions, Anson is on “leave’ from his job, and has decided to fix some of his past.

Mixed in with the action: the threats from other clubs, drug chefs, cartels and even some internal dust-ups between Anson and the patched-in members of the Bent Zealots, Ormand and Anson’s relationship starts to grow on both of them: almost without them noticing.  While Anson is never wholly comfortable with defining himself as a gay man, there is, quite early on, no doubting his desire for Ormand, even if it is wholly a sexual thing at first.  Because, Ormand sees the man beneath the carefully constructed façade, and isn’t afraid of him. Not much at least.

And this is where the story is so wrong it is right: two broken and damaged people: and they are both VERY broken, should not feel so right and complete. But Anson and Ormond are broken in ways that the other can fix, pushing them toward healing and growing personally even as their relationship is solidifying into permanent. Both men were craving family: one that loves and accepts you without question and do they ever get that, and more.

Language, action, violence, drugs, racism, anger, heat and heart are all packed into this story, and I can’t help but want more. Fans of Motorcycle Romance will love this gritty story!

Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.

ANSON: I was just a mercenary back from fighting the good fight overseas. I was on a quest for my father, my roots, looking for answers. Turk Blackburn, Bent Zealots MC Prez, ordered me on a fresh operation to prove myself, my guts, my valor. Infiltrate the Navajo Rez and find out who is claiming the Zealots’ turf, using kids to cook drugs.

My partner is the famous badge slut, Ormond Tangier, known far and wide for his mad oral skills, his subservience to anyone in uniform. Mercenaries don’t wear badges, but my dominant side soon has me all over that seductive Spanish servant. A man may as well have a few laughs while on a fatal mission. Because these things never end pleasantly.

ORMOND: I was flung into a life-or-death battle against the slimy Iceman, leader of a rival MC. Iceman is running all sorts of questionable ops on Bent Zealots land, and now Anson and I have to prove our street creds just to stake a claim in our own backyard.

I’m a friend of cops, firemen, and soldiers alike, but suddenly I only want one man ordering me around. Anson Dineyazzie, macho half-breed hired gun, has stolen more than just my heart. This was never supposed to happen.

ANSON: I swear I’m never falling for that service bottom Ormond. I’m accomplishing this op and going back to Afghanistan. But I have to wrest control of this Rez land from Iceman and the lethal hit man who has been trailing us. I’d bury anyone who got between me and Ormond. Does that mean I’m in love? God, I hope not. Don’t think I can take that again. Just need to get back onto the open road and blow the dust from my soul.

Publisher’s warning: This book is not for the faint of heart. It contains scenes of gay sex, illegal doings, violence, and forced seduction roleplay. There is no cliffhanger and there is a HEA.
