What I want in a summer read is something that is utterly out of the norm, doesn’t take itself too seriously and has some outlandish visual references laced with subtle to over-the-top humor. In Zo White and the Seven Morphs (Yes, a Take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) Zo is an aerialist with a circus, one run by a particularly distasteful owner. When Zo’s protégé slips from the silks to fall headfirst into the center ring during a practice, Zo also is injured after she faints.
From there, the morphs (men in full body suits who are referred to only by their color) who are acrobatic stunters on the ground beneath the aerialists spirit her away from the hospital to keep her safe from a prospective murderer.
Full of odd twists turns and more outrageous moments than a barrel of monkeys, Silkstone presents this winding who-dun-it that will have you scratching your head one moment and laughing the next. Loosely referential to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the seven colorful morphs have little to distinguish them beyond their color or special talent. The first of these stories that I have not listened to in audio, the story is a quick and fast read that is perfect for a summer afternoon with a cool drink.
You need to read this book with an open mind, and be willing to just enjoy the ridiculous situations and moments: this is entertainment and meant to be, with little to make you sad or anxious. The perfect escape read.
I purchased a copy of this title for my own library. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
